25. LETTERS TO HIS SPIRITUAL SUCCESSOR

25.2 LETTER NO. 2:

In this letter the Great Khwaja Moinuddin Hassan Chishty (R.A.) recalls an incident when the Great Khwaja Usman-e-Harooni (R.A.) was approached by a man who asked him the best way of knowing that one had attained nearness to God. The revered Khwaja Usman Harooni (R.A.) told him that the best way was by doing good deeds. The door (of nearness) was opened to those who had been given the power to do good deeds. Khwaja Usman-e-Harooni (R.A.) also recalled a story of a man who had a punctual maidservant who used to get up at midnight for recitation of her prayers. When her master saw her thus he was overcome by her reply to his question on her nearness to God. She said that she knew the energy because it was the power given to her by God to get up and say her prayers at midnight. At this the master told her, "Go away. O maid servant, I set thee free for God."
