29. BUILDINGS AT DARGAH SHARIF

29.1 THE HOLY TOMB:

The mortal remains of the Great Saint lie buried several feet below the floor of the dome. It was Sultan Gyasuddin, one of the Malwa Kings, who constructed the structural worldly resting place of Hazrat Khwaja Moinuddin Hassan Chishty (Radiallahu Ta’ala Anhu) some time in 1464 A.D. and constructed a dome over it on around 1464-1500 AD. After sometime, Emperor Akbar remodeled the Shrine in 1564 AD. subsequently, alterations and modifications were made by Emperor Shahjahan. The paintings inside the Rowza Sharif as well as in Begami Dalan were added later.

The tomb of the Great Hazrat Khwaja Moinuddin Hassan Chishty Sanjari Summa Ajmer Radi Allaho Ta’ala Anhu (peace to his soul) is always covered with precious gilaphs (sheets of expensive cloth) with rich (gold) embroidery work all over, which are presented by the followers and devotees of the Holy Saint. Besides the top of the Mazare-Mubarak is always covered full length with fresh fragrant flowers, mostly roses and jasmine.

The Shrine is surrounded by two silver screens, the inner screen was presented by Emperor Jahangir, and the outer was presented by his Highness, Jaipur, in 1730 A.D.

The inside of the dome and the walls were artistically engraved and embellished in gold tracing.

There are two store rooms near the shrine on either side of the two entrances through Begami Dalan. The smaller of the two contains paraphernalia for routine worship of the shrine, the keys of which are kept by the Khadim on duty at the shrine. He hands over the keys to his reliever; thus these keys change hands every day throughout the year. In the store room lies buried the Principal Khadim, Cousin and the spiritual brother of the Great Hazrat Khwaja Baba (R.A.), i.e. Sayed Fakhruddin Gurdezi (R.A.), the great ancestor (head) of the present Saiyyadzadas of the Khadim community. The other store  rooms contains very valuable presents of gold, precious stones, Gilaphs etc. and it is secured by seven locks, the keys of which are in the custody of seven different heads of families of the Khadim Community. This room can be opened only when all these seven locks are opened. Here lies the grave of wife of Hazrat Khwaja Sayed Fakhruddin Gurdezi (R.A.) (peace to his soul). The reader comes across the name of Fakhruddin quite often. For clarity, it must be stated that there were two persons bearing the name. One man, Hazrat Khwaja Fakhruddin Gurdezi, was the Chief Khadim, cousin and spiritual brother of Hazrat Khwaja Moinuddin Hassan Chishty R.A.A. (peace to his soul) who came in the company of the latter, originally from Arabia, while the other person was Hazrat Khwaja Fakhruddin Chishty (RA) the eldest son of Hazrat Khwaja Gharib Nawaz (R.A.), who was born in India at Ajmer Sharif.

The relationship between these two is that of uncle and nephew. The entire maintenance of the Astana Auliya -direction, supervision, control, opening, closing, cleaning, strewing of sandal paste on the shrine, applying after perfumes, covering the Shrine shroud (Chader) is controlled by the Saiyyad Zadas. Apart from the services at the Shrine, the visitors, devotees, and followers who come to fulfill their vows are conducted to this shrine by the (Saiyyadzadas) Khadims and Shaikhzadas. Without the meditation of a Khadim the vows and service (Ziarat) are said to be incomplete. All gifts, offerings and donations for the Services (Khidmat and Vaka/ath) are as of right and tradition collected by the Khadims. No one else has any right in this matter.
