29. BUILDINGS AT DARGAH SHARIF

29.17. JAMA-E-AL TUTMISH (Dhai-Din-Ka-Jhopra)

The most ancient monument of Hindu architecture is Adhai-Din-Ka-Jhopra in the west of Ajmer. All this art and sculpture work in this College building was completed by Hindu masons.

The Adhai-Din-Ka-Jhopra was constructed during the reign of Raja Inder Sen, while Ander Kote was the City. Sultan Shahabuddin Ghouri captured it and later on it was converted into mosque in 595 A. Hijri. For centruries this was the only mosque in Ajmer named a Jhopra because faqirs and derveshes began to assemble here in the time of Marahthas to commemorate the annual Urs Celebration of their Peer i.e. Panjabashah. The Urs lasted for two and a half days and the faqirs used to stay up to this two and a half day, this is why it is called Adhai-din-ka Jhopra.

In 614 Hijri, further construction took place. It was repaired in 1293 Hijri. In the front arch, both on the right and left side some Quranic Inscriptions are carved. It is also remebered as Jama-e-Al Tutmish.
