When Emperor Alamgir, who is known as
Aurangzeb, paid a visit to the Shrine of the
Great Hazrat Khwaja Moinuddin Chishty R.A.A.
(peace to his soul) he saw a large number of
lame, deaf and blind beggars gathered in the
hope of getting alms and charity from the
Emperor.
The great Emperor was surprised to see such
a large gathering and wondered how such a
large number of beggars could exist at the
Dargah Sharif and why they could not be
restored to normalcy and get their aims,
wills and wishes fulfilled through the Great
Hazrat Khwaja Baba's (R.A.) blessings.
Aurangzeb pondered over the great
achievements of the Holy Saint. He suddenly
became enraged at the beggars. He
interviewed them individually. He came to
the conclusion that these beggars had
forgotten their original purpose of curing
their disabilities and instead had fallen
prey to greed and worldly evils. They were
using the people’s sympathy for the disabled
for their own ends. The Emperor felt that
such beggars were not fit for alms and for
the sympathy of public at large.
The Emperor then warned all the beggars
strictly that if after performing the Ziarat
of the Holy Saint he found anyone amongst
the beggars unbestowed and unblessed, he
would slay them with his sword. As soon as
the beggars heard the unexpected words from
the Emperor they felt terribly afraid and
preferred to leave the place. Thereafter,
Emperor Aurangzeb went to Astana Sharif of
the Great Khwaja Baba (R.A.) for ziarat
leaving behind a few soldiers to escort all
these blind beggars from that place. The
beggars began weeping in their hearts and
started praying to Hazrat Khwaja Baba (R.A.)
to invoke his mercy, and intervention. This
had a wonderful effect.
Their prayers were accepted and Hazrat
Khwaja Baba (R.A.) fulfilled their wills,
wishes and desires. After this miracle the
beggars all left the Dargah Sharif
immediately with gratitude and thanked Allah
Pak for the fulfillment of their innermost
wishes and wills.
When Aurangzeb completed his ziarat and came
out from the Astana Sharif he visited the
site where he had met the large crowd of
beggars. On enquiry he was informed that all
the desires, wills and wishes of the crowd
of beggars had been miraculously fulfilled
by the Holy Saint and that all of them had
left for their places.
On hearing this, the Emperor smiled and
addressed his followers in the following
manner, "All these persons were involved in
avarice and engaged in the collection of
money, hence they had forgotten their
original purpose of visiting this holy
place.”
